IN 1953, Oklahoma opened the Turner Turnpike. It was to be tollfree as soon as it was paid for with tolls. That happened in three years. The legislature decided to extend the tolls long enough to build MORE tollroads which would then pay for themselves. It is 2009 and we are still paying tolls on all Oklahoma tollroads. What, you may ask, does this have to do with Maps III. Easy. As long as you do not say "Stop", the government (City or Federal, honest or not) will inevitably keep taking your money in taxes or bonds.
As for the schools, first it was liquor by the drink--that was going to cure all ills in our school system. It didn't, so then it was horseracing. Failed again, so they trotted out the lottery. Did I leave one or two out? Each time the state came up with a foolproof plan, it failed. Now people (good or bad) are trotting out Maps III. Wasn't the original Maps Program supposed to jumpstart Bricktown? Why should my tax dollars go to several people who own this or that in Bricktown? The Alaska pipeline was built, way over budget, by the oil companies. No Federal dollars went into it. It cost a lot but the private investors made it through. So can the owners of bricktown property. I am very angry over the $18,000,000 given to that sporting goods place while they were footing the total bill in two other cities for similar setups.
Saul Alinski wrote a book for radicals. One of his points is create a crisis, exploit it, and drown out or ridicule all opposition. IF the city wants something, I am suspicous. Another carrot on a long list of sticks just doesn't put me in crisis mode. If it is an initiative petition, I am likely in favor of it---Sticks and carrots are harder to hide amongst the people.
