This stunning quartersawn tiger oak mantel was pulled from a 1915 Mesta Park home. The mirror still bears its original date stamp of Jan. 26, 1907. Even though it's over a century old, it's in amazing condition. It was built by the Moline Furniture Works, which has an illustrious history (see more below). Note that an over mantel is made to sit above the actual fireplace mantel, hence the name. I've included an image of a 1908 ad for Moline Furniture, which illustrates the original placement of this piece.
The history of the maker is as amazing as is the mantel itself. Moline Furniture, of Moline, Ill., was begun in 1898, and was comprised of 1st and 2nd generation skilled Swedish craftsmen. The company's outstanding quality and reputation were such that they were chosen to furnish out the United States Supreme Court in Washington. D.C., as well as 24 U.S. Embassies and Consulates all round the world, in addition to innumerable other high-profile legal and commercial entities throughout. They were even commissioned to design and build an octagonal cabinet table that was used by both Franklin Roosevelt and Harry Truman in the White House.
The mantel overall measures 5 feet wide and 4 feet tall. The mirror is in great condition.
This is a one of a kind find.
