Beeler was a highly influential illustrator, sculptor, and a founding member of the prestigious Cowboy Artists of America (CAA). He passed while at a calf branding of a heart attack.
This 1978 art depicts a Plains Indian marriage negotiation or bartering scene. Two young braves are presenting horses as a formal dowry or bridal gift to an older couple standing on the right. They are surrounded by an encampment setting featuring tipis and a distant mountain landscape.
The details are amazing, including a dog, beadwork, moccasins, loin cloth, rifle, blankets, feathers, Indian symbols on the tipi, and much more. It is a picture you look at many times before you see all the reality and details.
This authentic print features a hand-signed pencil signature by Joe Beeler in the bottom margin, and the print number 24/250. This high-quality print was released in a strictly controlled, numbered batch of only 250. This early number increased its value.
Original Joe Beeler oil paintings command five-figure sums at prominent fine art auctions, hand-signed and numbered lithographs of "Bidding for a Bride" are much more affordable.
It was professionally framed with double matts of rust and gray to enhance the beautiful colors of the print. The wood frame matches the colors perfectly, although it shows some distress for the decades it has been on display. Decades ago the framing alone was $177 plus tax. It has a paper cover over the back, and glass to perverse this masterpiece.
A brace tag on bottom of the frame reads “Bidding For A Bride” Joe Beeler.
