Now, this is something you don't see every day, a vintage, 1961 Russian-made portrait lens, Zeiss Biotar copy. in perfect working condition, $375, OBO.
The Helios-40 85 mm f/1.5 (Russian: "Гелиос") is a manual, fast lens that can be used on DSLR cameras. It has an M39-M42 mount but now sports a Canon EF adapter. Orange and yellow lens filters are included.
The bright orange filter darkens blue and violet as well as green and yellow-green. It helps with landscape and architectural photography which require vivid and clear contours. The sky is distinctly toned with the clouds clearly contrasted against it. This filter is popular for portrait photography under natural light.
The yellow filter absorbs all colored light except yellow. It is the most-popular colored filter for shooting black and white images. Because a yellow filter absorbs blue, it provides significantly greater contrast between blue and yellow or white subjects.
The first version of this lens was based on the Carl Zeiss Jena Biotar 75mm f/1.5 (1938 rangefinder system Contax I-III). This version Helios-40 85mm f/1.5 uses the Planar optical design, (modification with thickened elements). This lens is great for portrait work and art photography.
(See attached pictures)
The Helios-40 85mm f/1.5 provides quite sharp images. Colors are slightly faded and have a warm tint.
The main feature of this lens is a special image plasticity (due to MTF curve dip), amazing volume, and a nice distinctive bokeh at apertures F1.5-2. The circles tend to have a "lemon" shape. Multicolored backgrounds can be achieved at apertures F1.5-2 with a distinctive radial swirly effect.
This lens is not only a true collector's item, but in the right hands, one can create unique and artistic photographs.
